SIEM REAP: The APSARA National Authority has embarked on a vital restoration project for the Tro Moung Temple, situated west of the Takav gate of Angkor Thom in Siem Reap’s provincial city. This temple, one of the four ancient hospitals of Angkor Thom, has endured considerable deterioration over the years.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Mr. Chea Sarith, an archaeologist and site manager, reported that the central tower of Tro Moung Temple has nearly collapsed, with only 20-30 percent of its original structure still standing. The damage encompasses fallen stones from the walls and roof, leaving only the front door frame and fragments of the southern and eastern sides intact. Furthermore, the western and northern sections have lost about 50 percent of their stonework.

In light of this extensive damage, the APSARA National Authority’s restoration team has implemented a phased strategy to restore and preserve the temple. The initial phase involves documenting the temple’s current layout and analysing its
construction characteristics and damage to guide repair efforts.

The second phase involves cataloging the displaced stones to ascertain their function and original placement. Preliminary evaluations reveal around 500 stones on the west side and 600 stones on the north side, categorized into types such as roof stones, wall stones, corner stones, pillars, and blind doors.

Presently, the restoration team is concentrating on reinforcing the foundation of the central tower as part of their mission to revive this historic structure.
