Three Key Measures Taken for Effective Water Management

Phnom Penh: The Economic and Financial Policy Committee (EFPC) has taken three important measures to ensure water resource security and sustainable use of water resources.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the measures were approved during an EFPC meeting held on March 5 under the chairmanship of H.E. Dr. Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance, and Chairman of EFPC. The meeting addressed key points, including the current status of water management and challenges such as limited efficiency in water resource allocation, a lack of legal norms, insufficient information sharing on water resource data, and the effective management of private water operators.

At the conclusion of the meeting, EFPC agreed on immediate, short-term, and medium- and long-term measures for effective water resource management. As an immediate action, local people and competent authorities are encouraged to protect and preserve water sources and prepare financial resources for intervention during the upcoming dry season.

The short-term measure, intended for implementation within one to two years, focuses on re-evaluating investments in the water resources sector and water supply capacity. This aims to meet the needs and support the agricultural and industrial sectors.

The medium- and long-term measure involves preparing a comprehensive master plan for water resource development, management, and use. It also includes continued reforms and strengthening of management mechanisms for relevant ministries and institutions.
