Senate President Receives Former Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan


Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen received here at the Senate Palace this morning visiting H.E. Prof. Yamanaka Akiko, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Ambassador for Peacebuilding of Japan.

In the courtesy meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed welcome to H.E. Prof. Yamanaka Akiko’s visit to Cambodia and hoped that she would witness Cambodia’s real progress compared to the last 20 years.

For her part, H.E. Prof. Yamanaka Akiko told Samdech Techo Hun Sen of her visit to the region, the purpose of which is to participate in a seminar organised by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) on Sept. 27 to promote the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, and to give a lecture at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.

H.E. Prof. Yamanaka Akiko also briefed Samdech Techo Hun Sen on the outcomes of her discussions with Cambodian culture and women’s affairs ministers related to the roles of women in contribution to maintaining peace in society.

he Cambodian senate president laid stress on the Royal Government’s social protection policy, especially for women, and its attention to promoting higher education among women, increasing the number of women at the decision-making level, and so on.

Cambodia ranked first in ASEAN in the dispatch of female soldiers to peacekeeping operations under the UN umbrella, he underlined.

Besides, the two sides exchanged views on the Myanmar crisis. Samdech Techo Hun Sen hoped that ASEAN and Japan can cooperate to bring Myanmar to normalcy, and requested Japan to consider the possibility to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar affected recently by natural disasters.
