Phnom Penh: Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen emphasized the significance of the Dec. 2 Front and the Jan. 7 Victory in shaping contemporary Cambodia. His remarks came on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the founding of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodian Motherland (SFDCM), previously known as the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation (KUFNS).
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Hun Sen shared his thoughts on social media, stating, “This is the truth of history.” He underlined the pivotal role played by these events in liberating Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge regime. The KUFNS was a national movement formed through the unity of people both inside and outside the country. Key figures, including Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin and the late Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Thamma Pothisal Chea Sim, collaborated with Hun Sen and other patriots to topple the Khmer Rouge regime on Jan. 7, 1979.
The KUFNS was established on Dec. 2, 1978,
in the Snuol Liberation Area of Kratie province. It has since been renamed the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodian Motherland, serving as a leading mass organization of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). Hun Sen recalled how the Cambodian people responded to the Front’s call by uniting with the support of the Vietnamese Volunteer Army and international allies to overthrow the Democratic Kampuchea regime, achieving victory on Jan. 7, 1979.
The victory marked the end of a dark chapter in Cambodian history, allowing the people to reclaim their rights and freedoms and begin rebuilding their nation. Hun Sen urged his compatriots to continue upholding the spirit of solidarity and maintaining peace to ensure ongoing development and prosperity for Cambodia.
