Senate Election Campaign Conducted Smoothly, Says NEC

The two-week-long campaign for the 5th Senate Election has been conducted smoothly with understanding, tolerance and good cooperation from all concerned parties, said a senior official of the National Election Committee at a dissemination meeting with stakeholders on Feb. 23. H.E. Som Sorida, a Member of NEC, said during the election campaign from Feb. 10 to 23, 2024, the four registered political parties, namely the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), the FUNCINPEC Party, the Khmer Will Party, and the National Power Party have run their respective campaigns with their own means in accordance with the laws. 'Overall, the election campaign of the political parties was conducted smoothly, with security, safety, good order, and without complaints,' he said. Tomorrow is the 'White Day' which bans all campaign activities, and this non-universal election is scheduled for Feb. 25 from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm at 33 polling stations in the eight regional constituencies throughout Cambodia. According to NEC, the eligible v oters will be all the 25 National Assembly members and the 11,622 commune/Sangkat councillors. The four political parties will compete for the 58 among the 62 seats, while two of the remaining seats will be appointed by His Majesty the King and the other two by the National Assembly. The 4th Senate Election took place in 2018, during which CPP won all the 58 seats. The Senate of Cambodia was established on Mar. 25, 1999 with 61 senators. At that time, the senate members were appointed, of them 33 were from the CPP, 21 from the FUNCINPEC Party and seven from the Sam Rainsy Party. Source: Agence Kampuchea Presse
