Red-listed fish protected at Pu Huong Nature Reserve


Mat fish (Onychostoma gerlachi), listed in Vietnam’s Red Book of Endangered Species, has been being currently protected and revived at the Pu Huong Nature Reserve in the central province of Nghe An. Covering an area of more than 46,460 hectares, spreading over 15 communes of 5 mountainous districts of Nghe An, Pu Huong Nature Reserve has hundreds of large and small streams, which are home to various aquatic species, including the rare Mat fish. Being considered a specialty, this fish species has been nearly depleted due to overfishing. Over the years, aware of the value of this fish species attached with the local traditions and culture, people in Pu Huong have been unanimously protecting this rare fish species.
