Phnom Penh: Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has re-appealed to all stakeholders to pay more attention to traffic accidents as more and many cases have occurred lately. Addressing the closing ceremony of the annual conference of the Ministry of Public Works and Transports held in Phnom Penh this afternoon, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said that after the war ended, road traffic accidents are the leading cause of deaths for Cambodians. The Premier also called on the drivers to comply with the traffic laws to avoid the accidents.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Cambodia recorded 2,844 cases of road accidents last year, according to H.E. Phorn Rim, spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, adding that more than half of the accidents occurred at night. The accidents claimed 1,509 lives, representing a 14 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2023, and injured 3,720 others.
Excessive speeding, violation of the priority rights, drunk driving, not wearing a helmet, and overtaking and turning in dangerous situations are among the major causes of the road accidents in Cambodia.
