Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen this morning warned his compatriots of the growing cases of HIV/AIDS in the country.

“A total of 1,400 new HIV infection cases were detected in 2022, a year-on-year increase by 300 cases,” he underlined at a get-together with some 19,000 workers and employees from 13 factories and enterprises in Phnom Penh capital city and Kandal province, held at Morodok Techo National Stadium in Khan Chroy Changvar, Phnom Penh.

According to the Premier, the new infections were found largely in MSM (Men who have sex with men) group.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen called on his compatriots to be careful as HIV/AIDs remains in Cambodia by adhering to the preventive measures, and not to discriminate against people living with HIV.

Regarding the LGBT people in Cambodia, Samdech Techo Prime Minister said the Kingdom neither gives them legal right nor prohibits them from marriage. They can live together as long as there is harmony, and for HIV/AIDs, they must know and find ways to protect themselves, especially among the MSM.

HIV/AIDS cases were first reported in Cambodia in 1991. In 2017, Cambodia was one of the seven countries globally to have achieved the 90-90-90 HIV/AIDS target.
