‘Pho’ of Hanoi recognised as national intangible cultural heritage

‘Pho’ (Noodle soup) of Hanoi capital city has been named in the national intangible cultural heritage list by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Hanoi currently has nearly 700 ‘Pho’ restaurants across 30 districts, mostly in Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Cau Giay, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Hai Ba Trung and Long Bien. The birth of Pho can be traced back to the early 20th century in Northern Vietnam, particularly in Hanoi. Initially, Pho was a popular street food, served by vendors throughout streets of Hanoi.
