Phnom Penh’s Walk Street Thrives Post-Khmer New Year Celebrations


Phnom Penh: Even after three days of Khmer New Year celebrations, Phnom Penh’s Walk Street continued to attract large crowds on Sunday, April 20, showcasing its sustained appeal as a cultural space.



According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the atmosphere remained lively along Preah Sisowath Quay with traditional performances organized for the public. Spectators enjoyed classical Khmer dances and a Bokator martial art show.



Numerous young people participated in traditional games and danced, maintaining the joyful spirit of the New Year.



Ms. Dor Samphors, spokesperson for Phnom Penh Municipality Hall, highlighted that the Bokator performance took place at 7 PM on Sunday. She noted the high visitor turnout on Saturday, with many youths engaging in traditional games like jump rope and handkerchief hide-and-seek, along with dancing.



Phnom Penh Governor H.E. Khuong Sreng emphasized the curation of Walk Street with cultural activities, including performances of traditional music, folk dances, circus shows, Chapei Dang Veng storytelling, and a mobile library for visitors.



The street has also seen an increase in food vendors offering local treats. Walk Street operates every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM along Preah Sisowath Quay.



This initiative continues to be a cultural and recreational focal point for residents and tourists, enhancing Phnom Penh’s reputation as a city that fosters vibrant celebrations.
