Phnom Penh: The Phnom Penh municipal administration has issued a directive to ensure public security, safety, and order during the upcoming Khmer New Year celebrations, which will take place from April 14 to 16, 2025. The authorities have announced strict bans on certain activities, including fireworks, water fights, and gambling, in an effort to maintain traditional values and public order.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the use, sale, and distribution of fireworks, firecrackers, and any other explosive devices are strictly prohibited. Water fights, including splashing colored or dirty water, throwing water balloons, and hitting others with water-soaked objects, are also banned to prevent traffic accidents and injuries. Furthermore, all forms of illegal gambling will be strictly prohibited during the festivities. Citizens are urged to follow traffic laws and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol to prevent accidents, as emphasized in the directive.
People visiting pagodas, businesses, markets, entertainment venues, and other establishments must be extra cautious with candles, incense, stoves, gas tanks, and electrical appliances. The source advises individuals to turn off electrical power sources before leaving their premises to prevent fires.
According to the directive, police, military police, and local authorities across all 14 Khans of Phnom Penh will enhance patrols and manage traffic flow in high-traffic areas. Firefighting teams and emergency response units will be on standby to handle any incidents. Khan-level authorities will implement specific security plans and maintain order to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for locals and tourists. Authorities will intensify efforts to prevent drug abuse, illegal gambling, and other social crimes while keeping a close watch on potential criminal activities and disturbances. Security forces will be on high alert to monitor and prevent any acts of terrorism, violent crimes, or public unrest, particularly in crowded areas such as temples and tourist hotspots.
Authorities have emphasized that law enforcement officers will strictly enforce these regulations to ensure peaceful and safe Khmer New Year celebrations in Phnom Penh capital city.
