Over 80,000 People Use Free Public Bus Service during Khmer New Year Celebration

More than 80,000 people, including factory workers, have used the free public bus to travel to their respective hometowns to celebrate the Khmer Traditional New Year and to return to Phnom Penh capital.

The figure rose by over 20,000 passengers or 35 percent compared to last year’s celebration, said on Thursday Mr. Met Meas Pheakdey, Spokesperson for the Phnom Penh municipal administration.

Two provinces with the highest number of passengers taking the public bus are Siem Reap and Battambang with 25,000 and more than 10,000, respectively, he added.

The spokesperson also affirmed that there were no significant problems during the New Year transport as it went smoothly and safely.

At the same time, he continued, people from all walks of life thanked Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet as well as the Phnom Penh municipal administration for continuing to provide free public bus service for them on the occasion of Khmer Traditional New Year.

Some 455 buses were used for the free service in Phnom Penh (6
0 buses) and back and forth between the capital and provinces (395 buses) between April 12-17 to reduce the people’s travel expenses.
