Optimal Period Announced for Preparing Fermented and Dried Fish in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH: The Fisheries Administration under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries has advised that the optimal time for preparing Cambodia’s traditional fermented fish, known as Prahok, and dried fish is from January 2 to January 10, assuming favorable weather conditions such as clear skies and an absence of rain or thunderstorms.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this recommendation follows observations of an increase in fish populations in the Tonle Sap River, particularly in areas around Phnom Penh and Kandal province. The administration highlighted that this abundance would make fish more accessible and affordable for Cambodians, encouraging them to prepare these staple food reserves during the suggested timeframe.

The Fisheries Administration has also urged local authorities to assist in facilitating the production of fermented and dried fish. This initiative aims to support communities and ensure ample food supplies, taking advantage of the increased fish catch during this period.
