Oceans minister to visit New York to promote S. Korea’s bid to jointly host U.N. oceans conference with Chile

Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung will attend a U.N. meeting on sea-level rise in New York this week as he seeks to promote South Korea’s bid to jointly host the U.N. Ocean Conference in 2028 with Chile, officials said Monday.

“During the trip, we will solidify South Korea’s position as a pivotal nation in the global maritime sector by leading agendas such as supporting vulnerable island nations amid climate change,” Kang said in a statement.

The minister also plans to discuss strategies for hosting the U.N. Ocean Conference with the Chilean foreign minister, the ministry said.

Kang will highlight South Korea’s support for the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction agreement during his trip as well, which aims to expand global cooperation for a sustainable maritime ecosystem, the ministry said.
