Koh Rong: In an unusual and delightful occurrence on Wednesday, April 16, nine dolphins were observed swimming close to the shore of Prek Svay Beach on Koh Rong Island, Preah Sihanouk province. The sighting coincided with the third day of the three-day (April 14-16) Khmer Traditional New Year celebrations, drawing the attention and joy of many local residents.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Mr. Reach Sovann, the Acting Governor of Koh Rong city, confirmed the presence of the marine mammals. “This morning, nine dolphins swam close to the shore at Prek Svay Beach, and many locals came to enjoy their presence,” he stated. He noted that the dolphins varied in size, ranging from two metres to slightly over two metres in length.
Local authorities and officials from the Fisheries Administration are actively monitoring the group to ensure their safety and well-being. There is a concerted effort to educate the public, particularly local fishermen, about the significance of protecting these rare marine animals for the benefit of the local tourism industry in Koh Rong City. Technical officers have also been in contact with marine wildlife conservation experts to seek guidance on how to safely encourage the dolphins to return to deeper waters.
According to Mr. Sovann, the dolphins’ behaviour shifted throughout the day. While they were initially more approachable in the morning, allowing locals to interact and play with them, they became more hesitant and wary of human presence by midday.
