New International Tourism Port Opens in Kampot, Enhancing Coastal Transportation


Kampot: The Kampot International Tourism Port in the coastal Kampot province was officially inaugurated today, with Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet presiding over the ceremony. The event also saw the presence of Ms. Jyotsana Varma, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for Cambodia.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Prime Minister Hun Manet congratulated Kampot province on this important achievement, extending his appreciation to the ADB for funding the construction of the tourism port and other infrastructure projects in Cambodia. He emphasized the significant role of the partnership between the ADB and the Royal Government of Cambodia in promoting socio-economic development and elevating the living standards of the Cambodian people.

Ms. Jyotsana Varma expressed the ADB’s pride in its strong collaboration with the Cambodian government and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to working closely with government agencies to ensure the prosperity of the Cambodian people thr
ough various projects and programmes.

Located in Chum Kreal village, Chum Kreal commune, Teuk Chhou district, the new port spans 4.25 hectares and is anticipated to become a crucial international waterway. It will facilitate the transportation of tourists to Cambodia’s southern islands and connect the country’s tourism industry with those of neighboring countries, the broader region, and globally, thus invigorating the local economy.

The construction of the port commenced in 2018 and concluded in 2022, as part of the ‘Greater Mekong Subregion Tourism Infrastructure for Inclusive Growth’ (GMS TIIG) initiative. The project received financial backing amounting to US$10 million from the ADB.

The port, which is operated by the local firm AZ Builders Co., Ltd., is designed to accommodate cruise ships with a capacity of up to 300 passengers.

Cambodia now has 119 maritime and river ports, including two international ports: Phnom Penh Autonomous Port and Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, along with 88 river ports a
nd 31 coastal ports.
