NEC Lauds Smooth Process of 21-day Election Campaign

The National Election Committee of Cambodia (NEC) has spoken highly of the smooth process of the three-week-long election campaign which ended on July 21.

“Overall, the 21 days of election campaign went smoothly, with high level of understanding, tolerance and good cooperation from all stakeholders, along with security, safety and order,” H.E. Hang Puthea, a Member and Spokesperson of NEC affirmed in a meeting with stakeholders at the NEC headquarters in Phnom Penh yesterday.

During the election campaign, the registered political parties have conducted their campaign in various forms and to the best of their ability, including meetings with supporters and activists in public places and at their respective headquarters, home visits, concerts, video screening, and so on, he pointed out.

Among the 18 registered political parties, 16 have organised parades, he said, noting that the parades of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) were the biggest and had the largest number of participants.

A total of 2,236,794 peoples participated in the election campaign using 99,794 cars, 722,733 motorcycles, 10,240 tricycles, 3,491 two-wheel tractors, 857 ferries and 620 bicycles, he told the meeting.

In addition, the spokesperson continued, the campaign activities and political messages of political parties are posted on Facebook every day.

NEC has also ensured equal airing time for all political parties to promote their political programmes on state-run radio and television and NEC’s bulletin.

According to H.E. Hang Puthea, as of July 20, NEC has received 32 complaints related to the election campaign.

For election observers, NEC accredited over 600 international observers from some 60 institutions and 89,562 national observers from 134 institutions for the 7th general election.

A total of 9,710,645 eligible voters, of them 5,161,906 are women, will cast their votes in 23,789 polling stations throughout the country on Sunday July 23, 2023.

The 18 political parties contesting for the National Assembly’s 125 seats include the Cambodian People’s Party, Cambodian Youth Party, Khmer United National Party, Dharmacracy Party, Democracy Power Party, Cambodian Nationality Party, Khmer United Party, Khmer Conservative Party, FUNCINPEC Party, Beehive Social Democratic Party, People Purpose Party, Ekpheap Cheat Khmer Party, Women’s Party for Women, Khmer Anti-Poverty Party, Khmer Economic Development Party, Cambodia Indigenous People’s Democracy Party, Grassroots Democratic Party, and Khmer Farmers Party.
