Phnom Penh: Samdech Moha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly, met with H.E. Ms. Marta Matrai, First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral ties and the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Hungary.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, during the meeting, Samdech Khuon Sudary emphasized the significance of the relationship between the two nations, particularly highlighting Hungary’s support during Cambodia’s challenging times following liberation from the Khmer Rouge regime. She expressed gratitude for Hungary’s consistent support in peace-building and nation development efforts in Cambodia. The meeting also underscored the upcoming 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries as a testament to their enduring partnership.
Samdech Khuon Sudary noted the frequent exchanges of visits at various levels, which have been pivotal in strengthening ties. She also stressed the importance of linking the Mekong and Danube regions to enhance trade and investment between Asia and Europe. She recalled Hungary’s participation in the 11th Plenary Session of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace in Phnom Penh and its role in developing the Universal Peace Charter.
Ms. Marta Matrai highlighted the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy and the establishment of friendship groups between the two parliaments. She mentioned that Samdech Khuon Sudary’s upcoming visit to Hungary and the future establishment of a Cambodian embassy in Hungary would signify new milestones in relations. She identified trade, agriculture, education, and climate change as key areas of cooperation, noting Hungary’s provision of 30 scholarships annually to Cambodian students.
Both leaders agreed on the principle that democracy should be developed internally, respecting national contexts.
