Samdech Moha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, this evening led a high-level parliamentary delegation to attend the 45th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-45) in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, until Oct. 23.
Themed this year ‘The Role of Parliaments in Enhancing Connectivity and Inclusive Growth of ASEAN’, AIPA will focus on how to further deepen connectivity and promote inclusive growth in the region.
The AIPA General Assembly is an important forum where AIPA Member Parliaments and Observer Parliaments convene to discuss, exchange views, share best practices, and adopt resolutions on regional issues with the aim to promote peace, stability, prosperity, and connectivity.
According to the National Assembly’s General Secretariat, during the 45th AIPA General Assembly, Samdech Khuon Sudary will attend several key meetings, including the AIPA Executive Committee Meeting, Opening Ceremony, First Plenary Session, W
omen Parliamentarians of AIPA Meeting (WAIPA), WAIPA Women Political Leaders Forum, Second Plenary Session, and the Closing Ceremony.
Besides, the Cambodian delegation will hold bilateral meetings to strengthen parliamentary ties with other parliamentary delegations, including the bilateral meetings with the President of the National Assembly of Lao PDR, the President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Thailand, the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and parliamentary delegations from other countries.
AIPA, comprises of 10-member parliaments including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam. AIPA, was originally formed on Sept. 2, 1977, known as the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organisation (AIPO). In 2006, AIPO was transformed into AIPA for a deep regional integration and connectivity.
Cambodia became a member of AIPA in 1999 and has hosted the AIPA General Assembly twice: the 30th Gen
eral Assembly in 2011 and the 43rd General Assembly in 2022.
