MISTI Holds First Water Loss Management Training Workshop to Enhance Capacity of Water Supply Authorities

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) has been hosting at the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority on July 16-17 and July 23 a training workshop on Management of Water Loss to enhance capacity of water supply authorities.

H.E. HEM Vanndy, Minister of MISTI, presided over the opening ceremony of the workshop in Phnom Penh on Tuesday.

The training aims to bolster the capacities of all 11 water supply authorities across the country to implement effective water supply management, pointed out MISTI.

The Pentagonal Strategy Phase 1 prioritises “Water” alongside People, Road, Electricity, and Technology, said the source, adding that Cambodia also targets in its SDGs to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all citizens by 2030. To support these priority and target, MISTI is expanding water supply nationwide through collaborative efforts with various stakeholders and partners, including the private sector.

‘This training is part of MISTI’s a
ction plan to strengthen the strategic role of the state in managing and leading the potable water sector by enhancing the capacity of the water supply authorities. Effective management of water loss is crucial for advancing the provision of “affordable” water supply – a fundamental aspect of water service that requires clean water to be of quality, safe, sustainable, and affordable,’ H.E. HEM Vanndy said.

According to MISTI, this is the first training workshop on management of water loss for officials in charge and water supply authorities. MISTI will also organise leadership training in the field of water supply and other technical courses in the near future. The programme will be expanded to private water operators and the Cambodia Water Association (CWA).

Through this training programme, officials in charge and management of water supply authorities will gain insights into water loss management, share experiences, and provide feedback for the Ministry. This will serve as a basis for developing legal sta
ndards on water loss management to be applied nationwide.

Water supply services are essential not only for meeting daily needs but also for promoting public health and supporting the development of various economic sectors such as industry, agriculture, tourism, and SMEs.
