Media Asked to Report MGI Incident with Greater Care

The Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ) and the Thai Journalists Association (TJA) have called on the media in both countries to report on the recent Miss Grand International (MGI) incident with greater care to avoid a wider conflict.

The recent tensions between Miss Grand International Public Company Limited, headquartered in Thailand, and Miss Grand Cambodia, eventually led to the decision to withdraw as co-hosts, while some media outlets, particularly on social media, have reported on the event, causing the news to go viral in both countries.

Media outlets should not use the conflicts between the two private companies or social media content about the event for their own gain, underlined the CCJ and TJA in a joint press statement made public after a virtual meeting between their executives on Oct. 10.

‘We encourage social media users in both countries to exercise discretion when receiving information about the disputes between the two companies, and to consider the consequences before sharing informati
on on their personal social media channels,’ it added.

CCJ and TJA also urged both private companies to resolve their disputes as quickly as possible to prevent the situation from worsening.

‘The executives of both media organisations sincerely hope that the ongoing disputes between the two private companies will be resolved as quickly as possible to mitigate the risk of unexpected situations that could negatively impact the long-standing relationship between the two countries,’ the statement concluded.
