Siem Reap: Siem Reap province experienced a vibrant and bustling Khmer New Year celebration on the first day (April 14), drawing an estimated 800,000 visitors, including both national and international tourists, alongside local residents.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this impressive figure was reported by Mr. Thim Sereyvuth, the Acting Director of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Tourism.
The highlight of the festivities was the widely popular ‘Angkor Sankranta’ event, which attracted approximately 760,000 participants.
This lively celebration unfolded across several key locations, including the majestic Angkor Wat Temple, the serene Royal Garden, the picturesque riverside area, and the vibrant Pub Street zone. Notably, this significant number included 4,537 international tourists who came to experience the unique cultural traditions of Cambodia.
Beyond the main Angkor Sankranta events, other prominent attractions within Siem Reap province also witnessed a surge in visitors. The spiritually significant Phnom Kulen area welcomed around 4,500 people seeking cultural and natural immersion. The iconic Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, drew approximately 6,500 visitors eager to experience its unique ecosystem and floating villages. The tranquil clear water Baray (reservoir) provided a refreshing escape for about 4,000 individuals.
Furthermore, various community-based tourism sites and resorts throughout the province collectively hosted an estimated 15,000 visitors, showcasing the diverse appeal of the region.
The remarkable influx of visitors underscores Siem Reap’s enduring status as a premier destination for both cultural immersion and leisure, particularly during the Kingdom’s most cherished traditional holiday.
The high turnout is a testament to the province’s rich heritage, stunning landscapes, and the captivating spirit of the Khmer New Year celebrations.
