The Law on Amendment to the Election Law was promulgated by a royal decree signed on July 4 by His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia.
The eight-article law is aimed to reform the “right to stand for election” in order to enhance the value of pluralist liberal democracy stated in the constitution of Cambodia, as well as to promote accountability of elected political leaders at the national and sub-national levels.
The law was approved by the National Assembly on June 23, 2023 at its 9th session of the 6th legislature, and by the Senate at its 10th session of the 4th legislature on June 29, 2023, while its constitutionality was declared by the Constitutional Council of Cambodia yesterday.
