KPU suggests deterrent effect for money politics perpetrators

Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) – A member of the General Election Commission (KPU), Parsadaan Harahap, suggested the imposition of punishment for perpetrators of money politics in the 2024 election that could prevent the likelihood of reoffending. He conveyed this at the Mapping the Vulnerability of the 2024 General Elections on “Strategic Issues of Money Politics” in Bandung, West Java, on Sunday. “That needs to be discussed further so we can formulate a deterrent effect for the perpetrators and anyone involved in the money politics,” he emphasized. He noted that until now, the punishment for the perpetrators of money politics does not really have a deterrent effect on their intention to engage in money politics. The commission found that in many money politics cases during elections and regional elections, the alleged perpetrators disappeared even when their cases were still under legal processes. “However, the person concerned will suddenly appear and then be inaugurated or come to power,” Harahap added. For this reason, he asked related parties to reformulate regulations related to money politics. He also hopes that the punishment for the perpetrators will not be limited to fines or imprisonment. “For example, it can be in the form of a judicial process verdict. That is also important. The most important thing is that the punishment must give impact to their power or status,” Harahap conveyed. He considered that this approach is more administrative and effective. If someone tries to carry out money politics in order to win the election and have power, then his power will be disrupted as a result of the legal process.
