Phnom Penh: Japan’s newly appointed Defence Attach© to Cambodia, Colonel Hara Takashi, has made clear his intention to deepen military cooperation between the two countries, with a particular focus on establishing a Cambodian military attach© in Tokyo.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Colonel Hara Takashi expressed his commitment to strengthening ties across all branches of the Cambodian military during a meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, H.E. General Tea Seiha. Colonel Takashi described his diplomatic role as a fulfillment of his aspirations and emphasized the importance of cooperation across the army, navy, and air force. He also expressed hope for the deployment of a Cambodian military attach© to Japan in the near future.
H.E. General Tea Seiha responded positively to the appointment, recognizing the significance of Japan’s first-ever resident defence attach© in Cambodia. The General highlighted the potential for increased collaboration, including high-level exchanges, Japanese naval visits, and joint efforts in humanitarian and peacekeeping operations. He also acknowledged Japan’s support in capacity-building initiatives such as training and demining operations.
Regarding Japan’s request for a Cambodian military attach© in Tokyo, H.E. General Tea Seiha confirmed that discussions are underway within the Ministry of National Defence, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to facilitate this development.
Further reflecting the strengthening bilateral relationship, the Japanese military attach© announced that the Commander of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces (JSDF) is scheduled to visit Cambodia in June. Additionally, he commended Cambodia for approving the first-ever port call by a Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) mine-clearing unit at Ream Naval Base, highlighting it as a sign of Cambodia’s commitment to transparent and open security policies.
This increased military engagement underscores the strategic significance of the region and the growing security partnership between Japan and Cambodia.
