Kampong Chhnang: Minister of Information H.E. Neth Pheaktra has expressed strong support for providing opportunities for young athletes to participate in the National Kun Khmer Championship. The initiative aims to cultivate top-tier martial artists and foster a deeper appreciation for Cambodia’s ancient fighting art.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, speaking at the closing ceremony of the championship held in Kampong Chhnang province from February 17 to 20, H.E. Minister Neth Pheaktra emphasized the importance of engaging youth under 18 years old in the event for the first time. He highlighted how this move strengthens the country’s talent while preserving and revitalizing traditional Cambodian martial arts.
“This championship showcases the diverse techniques of Kun Khmer, instilling pride in our cultural heritage and ensuring its preservation for future generations,” H.E. Minister stated. “The Cambodian government, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and current Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, remains committed to supporting and promoting Kun Khmer as a national legacy.”
The minister underscored that the tournament serves as a platform for showcasing Cambodia’s rich martial arts traditions to both local and international audiences. It also creates opportunities for research and the rediscovery of forgotten techniques.
With political stability, economic growth, and peace as a foundation, Cambodia’s government continues to invest in the sports sector to enhance citizens’ well-being and develop elite athletes. H.E. Neth Pheaktra expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including sports federations, government institutions, provincial administrations, athletes, coaches, and referees, for their dedication to preserving Kun Khmer. He also extended special thanks to business leader Neak Oknha Sam Ang Vattanac, CEO of Vattanac Brewery, for sponsoring the event and actively supporting Kun Khmer martial arts.
The 2025 National Kun Khmer Championship featured 15 participating teams from various government ministries and provinces, with 139 athletes competing in 16 categories.
