Industry Minister Urges Provincial Departments to Bridge Local Businesses and Standards Development for Manufacturing and Export Growth

H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, has called on provincial departments to play an active and pro-active role in connecting local businesses with national standards development to foster manufacturing and export growth.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI), during his visits to the Provincial Departments of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, and Siem Reap on Sept. 12-13, 2024, H.E. Minister emphasised the importance of private sector support and engagement in identifying manufacturing potentials in each province and creating relevant standards that cater to the province’s unique economic landscape.

Outlining his vision and sharing the priority agenda of the ministry and provincial departments for the 7th mandate of the government, he stressed that developing national standards is vital, in light of Cambodia’s preparation for the ASEAN Harmonised Standards
set to take effect in 2025. Products that meet these standards will flow more freely within ASEAN, while those that do not will struggle to compete, both locally and regionally.

H.E. Hem Vanndy also highlighted the implications of Cambodia’s upcoming graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2029, noting that national standards will play a more crucial role in Cambodia’s achievement of its long-term economic goals for 2030 and 2050. He Urged the four provincial department to foster private sector adoption of standards, as doing so would enhance the competitiveness of Cambodian products, services, and operations.

To date, the National Standards Council has adopted approximately 1,700 standards with the recent addition of the Cambodian standards for rice liquor.
