Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has reaffirmed the Royal Government’s continued commitment to protecting the freedom of expression, freedom of the press in accordance with the country’s Constitution and Press Law.
In his message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day (May 3), Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that through this commitment, the media sector in Cambodia has seen proud development, but the quality and responsibility of journalists needs to be considered in spite of this development and large number of media outlets and journalists in the country nowadays.
Media is a double-edged sword that makes the nation prosperous through the participation of journalists in the national development, peace maintenance and political stability, he explained, adding that at the same time, the media can also make the nation in social chaos through the dissemination of false information, fake news and provocative information created by a handful of opportunists under the guise of journalism, which can harm the nation’s interest and the dignity of journalists and the media as a whole.
The Prime Minister also expressed his appreciation to all media institutions and journalists who have worked hard despite the impact of COVID-19 crisis and global political and economic crisis.
