FAO Forecasts Above-average Cambodian Rice Harvest in Latest Season

Rice output in East and South Asia is forecast at 695 million tonnes in the latest season, one percent below the record in 2021, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) said Monday.

“Harvests will be above the five-year averages in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, the Philippines and Thailand,” said the FAO’s quarterly global report on crop prospects and food.

But rice production in remaining countries including China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Viet Nam “are seen at below-average levels.”

The rice forecast for Cambodia is 11.6 million tonnes, up from a five-year average of 11.1 million tonnes.

Cambodia’s total cereal production is forecast at 12.3 million tonnes, up from a five-year average of 12.1 million tonnes.

Forecasts for East and South Asia include secondary crops harvested in the first half of 2023.
