Embassy of India in Phnom Penh Celebrates 155th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi


The Embassy of India in Phnom Penh, celebrated the 155th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Oct. 2, 2024 at Spean Nagar Park near his statue. Every year this day is observed in the name – ‘Gandhi Jayanti’.

Speaking on the occasion, H.E. Dr. Devyani Khobragade, Ambassador of India highlighted the Mahatma Gandhi teaching and way of simple and truthful life. She acclaimed him as the strongest man behind the whole freedom movement of India through non-voilence. His message of Non-violence is of great importance to whole world because he not only preached this idea but also successfully practiced it too. He always believed in simplicity, had a simple attire with the vision to achieve big goals in life and to the betterment of the entire nation. His significant teachings give us life lessons.

Rabindranath Tagore, a great Indian scholar, accorded the title of ‘Mahatma’ to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. To acknowledge his popularity, Time magazine named Mahatma Gandhi the ‘Man of the Year’ in 1930. In 2007, the U
N General Assembly also announced his date of birth i.e. 2nd of October, to celebrate every year as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’.

In this modern world, his thoughts and significant writings are taught in several world class universities and schools. His autobiography ‘My Experiment with Truth’ is all time bestseller of the world. Since Mahatma Gandhi ji always advocated cleanliness in our lives-physically and mentally, the Prime Minister of India H.E. Narendra Modi, couldn’t have had a better day to start his Cleanliness Drive throughout India than the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

As a concluding remarks, H.E. Ambassador told that to keep continue the cleanliness drive in our lives and neighbourhood by all of us is a great tribute we can offer to him. The Mahatma Gandhi will always be remembered as a great Indian philosopher, social reformer and a peaceful freedom fighter. She also thanked Indian diaspora for their active participation.
