DPM SOK Chenda Sophea Shares Key Insights at the UN Summit of the Future 2024 in New York


H.E. SOK Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, shared some insights at the UN Summit of the Future 2024 in New York from Sept. 22 to 23, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation released this afternoon.

During the Summit, H.E. SOK Chenda Sophea highlighted the needs to uphold the principle of the UN Charter and international law as the backbones for international order and global cooperation, stressing the importance of prioritising the use of diplomacy and meditation to resolve conflicts, and touching on Cambodia’s contribution of more than 9,000 men and women to support UN Peace Keeping Operation since 2006.

The Cambodian foreign minister informed the Summit that, thanks to sustained peace, Cambodia has made remarkable progress to become one of the highest achievers of the SDGs, particularly in reducing poverty, providing quality education and health care, creating more jobs, driving growth, and addressing cli
mate change.

H.E. SOK Chenda Sophea further underscored the necessity to intensify international cooperation to ensure that the proliferation of science, technology and innovation enhances human development, as well as emphasised shared responsibility to safeguard the needs and interests of youth and future generation, and the importance of inter-generational partnerships in line with the Declaration on Future Generations.

The Cambodian top diplomat was also convinced that the Summit’s outcomes will engender necessary reforms and adjustments for a strong multilateral system that embodies inclusive governance, technological equity and fair financial access for development, stressing that the UN Summit of the Future 2024 should be remembered as a decisive turning point in international cooperation to build a sustainable future for generations to come.

Themed ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’, the UN Summit of the Future 2024 was chaired by H.E. Philemon Yang, President of the 79th Session of the
UN General Assembly, with the participation of H.E. Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General, and Heads of State, Heads of Government and their high representatives from 187 UN member states.

The Summit stressed the importance of strengthening multilateralism for maintaining international peace and security and achieving the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

It agreed on the need to reform the UN system, including the Security Council, and international financial architecture. Reforms will make them fit and effective in addressing the many global challenges of today to ensure a more peaceful, harmonious and prosperous world for current and future generations.

The Summit also affirmed commitment to several transformative actions to sustain global peace and security, fight against the impacts of climate change, poverty and inequality, and ensure that technological advances support sustainable economic growth and human development, as laid out in the Pact of the Future endorsed by the Summit.
