Canada to Open an Embassy in Phnom Penh Soon


AKP Phnom Penh, October 11, 2024–Canada will open her embassy in Phnom Penh in the near future in order to strengthen the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

H.E. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, told Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet in their bilateral meeting in Vientiane, Lao PDR on Oct. 10, on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.

For trade ties, he continued, Canada will dispatch a trade delegation to Cambodia to meet with the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and relevant ministries to promote bilateral trade. He also expressed optimism about Canada-ASEAN trade relations when the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement will be reached.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed his pleasure at the progress of the long-lasting relationship between Cambodia and Canada and thanked the Canadian side for its contribution to the peace-seeking process and development of Cambodia.

The Cambodian Premier added that Canada is C
ambodia’s 7th biggest trade partner, which has contributed to the Kingdom’s socio-economic development. He recalled the recent progress of cooperation between the two countries, such as the organisation of a trade fair in Montreal and the planned opening of the Cambodian Embassy in Canada.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also emphasised that the Royal Government of Cambodia has launched a number of in-depth reform programmes to meet the needs and requests of the private sector with a better and more favourable investment climate, and incentive policies to help the private sector grow further.
