Cambodian Rice Prices Stable, Higher in Neighbouring Markets: FAO

Domestic rice prices were generally stable across Asia including Cambodia last month but rose in some of the major exporters, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

The FAO’s monthly Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Bulletin released Thursday also said that rice prices were “well above” year-earlier levels throughout much of East and South Asia in June.

“In China (mainland) and Cambodia, rice prices were generally stable and were close to their year-earlier levels, amid adequate market availabilities,” the bulletin said.

But it said that prices rose for the third month in a row in Thailand, mostly driven by steady international demand.

Prices also rose in Vietnam last month, reflecting a tight market associated with below-average production last year and larger exports in the first half of 2023, the bulletin said.

In Myanmar, prices of a widely consumed variety rose to new records — and were nearly triple already-high levels a year earlier. This reflected below-average output in 2023, “exacerbated by high agricultural inputs and transport costs as well as general inflationary pressure,” the FAO said.

Prices were generally stable in India and Bangladesh.
