Cambodian PM Urges for Higher Standards and Quality in Construction

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has called on local authorities, the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, and other state institutions to enhance construction standards and ensure high-quality infrastructure across Cambodia. Speaking this morning at the official inauguration of the two-storey Morodok Techo Flyover in the Kbal Thnal area of Phnom Penh, the Premier emphasised the need for Cambodia to prepare for natural disasters, particularly earthquakes-even though the country is not located in a high-risk zone.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister urged the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, the National Committee for Disaster Management, and all relevant institutions to strengthen cooperation and improve the technical standards in infrastructure development, both in the public and private sectors, to minimise potential risks following the recent earthquakes in Southeast Asia.

The Prime Minister noted that Cambodia experienced slight tremors during a recent earthquake in Myanmar, highlighting the importance of proactive measures and adherence to construction standards. He stressed the need for both the public and private sectors to prioritize safety over profits, stating, ‘Do not compromise the quality of construction. The private sector must work hand-in-hand with the state to prevent disasters. Making a profit should not come at the cost of safety or standards.’

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also instructed Phnom Penh Municipal Hall to address concerns related to old and potentially hazardous buildings, underscoring the importance of maintaining safety and quality in the country’s infrastructure development.
