Cambodian PM Urges for Effective Water Resources Management


Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has urged the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology to work with all stakeholders and relevant ministries and institutions to ensure the effective management of water resources.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology in Phnom Penh this afternoon, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said water resources have to be well managed at water basins and reservoirs.

At the same time, the Premier reaffirmed the royal government’s action on Tonle Sap’s flooded forests as Tonle Sap Great Lake is one of the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the world.

‘Water is the most important resource for life and socio-economic development. But it is facing challenges due to negative human activities, climate change, population growth and rapid economic growth, which are affecting water resources, water quality. This will continue to put a lot of pressure on the ecosystems,’ he said.

‘Effective a
nd efficient use of water resources is essential for sustainable socio-economic development,’ he underlined.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also expressed his appreciation for the ministry’s achievements in irrigation system.

H.E. Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, said by 2023, Cambodia had 2,352 irrigation systems across the 25 capital and provinces, including 56 large-scale, 1,166 medium-scale and 1,122 small-scale systems as well as 8 large-scale reservoirs.

The total irrigation capacity of the country thus reached nearly 2 million hectares, an increase of 32,123 hectares, benefitting a total of 29,800 families, pointed out H.E. Minister.
