Cambodian PM Urges for Continued Efforts to Fight Against Illicit Drugs


Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, has encouraged all stakeholders to continue to combat the illegal drugs with high attention.

While presiding over the closing ceremony of 2023 Annual Meeting of the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD) and the Dissemination of Plan for the 9th Campaign Against Illicit Drugs held at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel this afternoon, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said the fight against illegal drugs remains the priority of the Royal Government of Cambodia of the 7th legislature of the National Assembly.

The Premier expressed his concern over the new tactics of drug traffickers and called on all competent authorities to well cooperate and strengthen the law enforcement.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also encouraged relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Information, the Ministry Culture and Fine Arts, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and so on to further raise the people’s awareness on the danger of illegal drugs.

Moreover, the Pr
ime Minister urged all local authorities to eradicate drug use in their respective communities.

Last year, Cambodian authorities cracked down on 8,063 cases of illicit drugs, a year-on-year increase of 26.18 percent, said H.E. Neth Savoeun, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the NACD.

Some 20,002 suspects were arrested, up 33.33 percent, while nearly 3 tonnes of drug and some 1.5 tonnes of synthetic chemical substances were confiscates, he pointed out.

H.E. Neth Savoeun also reaffirmed the competent authorities’ commitment to continue the good collaboration with the international community and organisations to further enhance law enforcement against the drug use and trafficking.
