Phnom Penh: Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, this morning reiterated the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC)’s high attention to the national sovereignty. The Premier made the reaffirmation while presiding over the graduation ceremony of over 8,000 students of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, in response to reactions on social media and broadcasting platforms over border issue with Thailand.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet emphasized the importance of political maturity and responsibility in defending Cambodia’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty. He acknowledged the numerous comments and criticisms regarding the Koh Kut issue in Thailand but stressed that the RGC would not escalate tensions unnecessarily.
Regarding the border demarcation, Cambodia and Thailand began negotiations in 2006; however, they have yet to reach a resolution on both land and sea borders. Hun Manet explained that the RGC is addressing the
border issue through official mechanisms rather than social media or the media.
The official resolution mechanism involves the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and Joint Technical Committee (JTC), as agreed upon by both governments. Hun Manet noted that while there has been no resolution on the sea border, progress has been made on the land border. Of the 805-kilometer-long land border, 42 out of the 74 border markers have been agreed upon, based on the French-Siamese Treaty of 1907.
