Cambodian PM Calls for Wide Dissemination and Good Implementation of International Code for Protection of Tourists

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has said that the International Code for the Protection of Tourists (ICPT) should be widely disseminated and well carried out.

The Cambodian Premier made the call while receiving a courtesy visit from H.E. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), at the Peace Palace here this afternoon, according to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Personal Assistant to Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

The code is very important to protect the tourists and build their confidence to visit Cambodia, the Prime Minister underlined.

In addition, he continued, Cambodia is also developing its health sector to support the tourism sector in order to ensure safety and good health for all tourists visiting the Kingdom.

H.E. Zurab Pololikashvili informed Samdech Techo Hun Sen of the outcomes of the 35th Joint Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UNWTO Commission for South Asia (35th CAP-CSA) held in Phnom Penh from June 15 to 17, 2023, during which the ICPT was approved.

The UNWTO secretary-general spoke highly of the Cambodian Premier’s long-term vision and high commitment on tourism, and praised Cambodia’s humanitarian heart for allowing the docking of Westerdam cruise ship on Feb. 13, 2020 after being turned away by many countries due to COVID-19 fear.

Besides, he expressed the UNWTO’s continued support to the promotion of Cambodian tourism.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked the UNWTO for trusting Cambodia and holding meetings in the country, which has brought new achievements to Cambodian tourism.

For Westerdam cruise ship, he said it was a humanitarian action and a responsibility to protect the people’s lives.

Cambodia was the first country to sign, acknowledge and implement the International Code for the Protection of Tourists. The signing ceremony took place on June 15, 2023 in Phnom Penh under the presidency of H.E. Dr. Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance.

The International Code for the Protection of Tourists aims at restoring the confidence of tourists and promote the travel of tourists around the world.
