Cambodian Peacekeeping Unit 98 Celebrates Khmer New Year in Central African Republic


Bangui: Cambodian Peacekeeping Unit 98, specialising in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission, marked the Khmer Traditional New Year, the Year of the Snake, with a cultural gathering in the Central African Republic.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the celebration was attended by Brigadier General Nicolae Orose, Commander of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM), along with other military officers, deputy commanders, and both national and international guests involved in the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic mission zone (MINUSCA).

The commander of the Cambodian contingent highlighted that the New Year celebration was a cultural event that united UN peacekeepers from Cambodia and other countries. It was intended to display Khmer traditions and customs to the international community while fostering unity and camaraderie among the peacekeeping forces stationed in the Central African Republic.

During the celebr
ations, Major General Sem Ratana, First Vice Chairman of the National Committee and Acting Director General of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Force, Mine and ERW Clearance (NPMEC), sent a formal New Year greeting letter to the Cambodian peacekeeping forces deployed worldwide.

In his letter, Major General Sem Ratana expressed appreciation for the dedication and achievements of Cambodian peacekeepers serving with the UN in countries including Sudan, South Sudan, Lebanon, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He acknowledged their relentless efforts and commitment, which have resulted in significant contributions to both the NPMEC and the Royal Government of Cambodia.

He added that their work supports national defence, peace, and development, strengthens international ties, and brings pride to Cambodia. Their efforts have garnered the trust of the Cambodian Prime Minister and enhanced the reputation of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces globally.
