Phnom Penh: The Royal Government of Cambodia has effectively addressed more than 90 percent of the suggestions provided by the Supreme Consultation and Recommendation Council (SCRC) over the past year. This was revealed by H.E. Chhim Phal Virun, the Head of the SCRC Secretariat, during a press conference summarizing the latest SCRC meeting chaired by Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the SCRC is comprised of legally registered political parties that did not secure any seats in the national election. It serves as a body to assist the government in monitoring social and political issues. The Cambodian government values the council’s input highly, as evidenced by its recent actions. H.E. Chhim Phal Virun highlighted that SCRC members have submitted numerous written suggestions to the Prime Minister on various issues, including online gambling, traffic problems, land disputes, excessive alcohol advertisement, and public health concerns.
He f
urther noted that Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet reviewed and forwarded over 90 percent of the well-evidenced suggestions to relevant government ministries and institutions for prompt action. The SCRC was established following the 6th National Election in 2018 by the former Prime Minister, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen. Its mandate coincides with the government’s term.
The SCRC’s key responsibilities include initiating and providing consultations on government policies, laws, and regulations, as well as monitoring the implementation of these laws at both national and sub-national levels. Additionally, it offers recommendations in cases of governmental inactivity or irregularities. The council convenes monthly meetings led by its chairman, with each political party assuming the chairmanship on a rotational basis. Furthermore, meetings with the Prime Minister are held every six months or as needed at the Prime Minister’s behest.
