Phnom Penh: Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, H.E. Dith Tina, has urged farmers in Banteay Chmar commune, Thmar Puok district, Banteay Meanchey province to embrace modern contract farming practices, aiming to boost their incomes and ensure sustainable agricultural development. During a visit on Mar. 26, the minister engaged directly with local authorities and farmers, emphasising the government’s commitment to transforming the region’s agricultural landscape.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Minister Dith Tina, accompanied by Banteay Meanchey Deputy Provincial Governor Mr. Chhoeun Krayong and technical officials, held discussions with commune council members, village chiefs, and farmers, addressing their challenges and outlining strategies for improvement. The visit underscored the ministry’s focus on fostering agricultural communities and promoting modern farming techniques.
“Our key goal is to ensure that farmers achieve stable incomes and improved livelihoods. Establishing strong agricultural communities and implementing contract farming agreements are crucial steps in achieving this objective,” stated H.E. Minister during his address at the Banteay Chmar Agricultural Community. The minister highlighted the benefits of contract farming, which provides farmers with secure markets and predictable pricing. He encouraged the community to formalise agreements with companies and traders, ensuring a stable demand for their produce. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of shifting focus from solely increasing yields to prioritising quality, food safety, and environmental sustainability.
Farmers expressed gratitude for the minister’s direct engagement, while also raising critical issues. They requested enhanced technical training in crop cultivation, livestock farming, and the responsible use of agricultural inputs. Infrastructure concerns, including inadequate irrigation systems and dilapidated roads hindering market access, were also highlighted. Farmers further sought assistance in establishing market linkages and accessing agricultural credit.
H.E. Minister Dith Tina acknowledged these concerns, assuring the community that the ministry would collaborate with relevant officials to find viable solutions. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the provincial and local authorities in advancing Cambodia’s agricultural sector. The visit has instilled a sense of optimism among Banteay Chmar farmers, who are now more confident in the potential for agricultural growth in their community and across the nation under the ministry’s leadership.
The focus on modernising farming practices and strengthening market linkages is expected to significantly improve the livelihoods of local farmers and contribute to the sustainable development of Cambodia’s agricultural industry.
