Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s Ministry of Information is set to launch a nationwide campaign titled ‘Say No to Fake News’ in March, aiming to combat misinformation and educate the public on identifying false information.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Minister of Information H.E. Neth Pheaktra announced the initiative during a working group meeting at the ministry’s office. The campaign seeks to reduce and ultimately eliminate fake news while equipping citizens with the knowledge to distinguish credible information from misinformation.
‘This campaign is a crucial step in raising awareness about the dangers of fake news,’ H.E. Minister Neth Pheaktra stated. ‘It is not just a challenge for Cambodia but a global issue that requires appropriate measures.’ The initiative has gained support from various ASEAN countries and other international partners.
The Ministry of Information has established a task force to oversee the campaign’s development, with H.E. Minister Neth Pheaktra serving as the chair. The team includes H.E. Tep Asnarith, Under-Secretary of State, as Permanent Vice Chair, along with two additional vice chairs and 11 members.
The campaign will focus on educating the public about the definition and dangers of fake news while encouraging responsible information consumption. The minister emphasised that misinformation can mislead people, create confusion, and pose risks to national security and public safety.
The Ministry of Information is committed to equipping citizens with the necessary tools to critically assess news sources and prevent the spread of false information. As fake news remains a global challenge, Cambodia joins international efforts to tackle misinformation through proactive awareness campaigns and strategic interventions.
