Cambodia Organizes National Workshop to Implement UPR Fourth Cycle Recommendations

Phnom Penh: The Cambodian Human Rights Committee, in collaboration with the United Nations Human Rights (UNHR) in Cambodia, organized a National Workshop on March 24 to discuss the Dissemination and Follow-up to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Fourth Cycle Recommendations.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the workshop brought together representatives from the government, civil society, and international partners to outline the steps Cambodia will take to implement the UPR recommendations. The workshop aimed to spread awareness of the UPR recommendations, identify key ministries and their roles, and facilitate discussions to initiate an implementation plan through a consultative process.

A total of 140 participants attended the workshop, including 48 women, 91 men, and 1 person with diverse gender identity, representing the government, civil society, development partners, UN entities, and other stakeholders, the source added.

Benjamin Moreau, Deputy Representative and Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Human Rights in Cambodia, stated, “Today’s workshop marks a critical step in the most important phase of the UPR cycle: follow-up and implementation.” He emphasized that the effective implementation of UPR recommendations is essential for tangible improvements in human rights and creating an enabling environment for sustainable development. The successful implementation requires leadership, strategic planning, inclusive consultation, cross-sectoral collaboration, and adequate resources. An important outcome of the workshop will be the creation of Working Groups led by key ministries or institutions, tasked with developing a comprehensive implementation plan through a consultative process.
