Cambodia and Malaysia Seek Enhanced Bilateral Cooperation


Phnom Penh: Visiting Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia H.E. Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul expressed his eagerness to collaborate closely with the Cambodian Parliament, the Royal Government, and the Cambodian people to enhance relations between the two nations and within the ASEAN community. His remarks were made during a courtesy call on Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen at the Senate Palace.



According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, during the meeting, H.E. Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul praised Samdech Techo Hun Sen for his leadership and recognized him as a legendary statesman in the region. The Malaysian House Speaker emphasized Malaysia’s role as the Chair of ASEAN and its desire to bolster cooperation in trade, investment, and banking. He advocated for increased exchanges not only at the parliamentary level but also through scholarships for Cambodian students to study in Malaysia.



H.E. Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul reiterated the importance of ASEAN’s collective growth, highlighting the shared resources and understanding within the bloc. He called for trust, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence among member states. In response, Samdech Techo Hun Sen briefed the Malaysian Speaker on Cambodia’s current situation and its journey towards peace, sharing his insights on ASEAN’s development.



The Cambodian Senate President applauded the strengthening ties between Cambodia and Malaysia, noting the rise in visits by senior leaders. He encouraged further trust-building and trade promotion, suggesting a bilateral trade target of US$2 billion, along with increased economic, trade, investment, and tourism exchanges.



H.E. Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul is leading a high-level delegation from Malaysia’s House of Representatives on a three-day official visit to Cambodia, following an invitation from Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia.
