Analyst: PM’s Malaysia Visit to Foster Bilateral Diplomatic and Economic Tie

Cambodian Prime Minister’s first official visit to Malaysia is seen by an analyst as a diplomatic move to further strengthen the two countries’ economic cooperation.

Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet is leading his senior delegation for the one-day visit on Feb. 27.

Dr. Yang Peou, an analyst and secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said that the PM’s visit does not only aim to pitch investment in Cambodia but also to strengthen labour exchange as many Cambodians are working in Malaysia.

The Prime Minister has launched a technical and vocational education and training programme for 1.5 million youths, and Malaysia could be a potential labour market for those trainees, he added.

He continued that Malaysia is one of the biggest economies in ASEAN, and its relationship with Cambodia has never been an issue, so it stands as a good opportunity for the two to level up their bilateral diplomatic and economic relations.

According to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, as of Aug. 2
023, more than 1.3 million Cambodian migrant workers are living and working overseas, and some 2,200 of them are in Malaysia.
