PAS’ Additional Container Terminal Put into Official Use


The 253-metre-long additional container terminal was officially inaugurated at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS) in Preah Sihanouk province this morning under the presidency of Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and H.E. Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia.

Speaking on the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed the PAS’ new achievement, stressing that it will contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of the Cambodian seaport.

H.E. Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, said that the construction of the additional container terminal with 11.5-metre depth and container-handling capacity of 450,000 TEUs per year began in May 2023 under the presidency of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, former Cambodian Premier and current President of Senate, for a period of 17 months at a total cost of some US$37.5 million, of which around US$10 million was a concessional loan from the Government of Japan, and US$ 27.5 million was PAS’ budget as we
ll as some budget from the Royal Government of Cambodia.

The minister continued that the additional terminal will increase PAS’ capacity from 550,000 TEUs to 1 million TEUs of containers per year, and enable the docking of 10.4-metre-deep cargo ships.

According to H.E. Peng Ponea, in 2023 PAS handled almost 800,000 TEUs per year, 1,506 ships, and over 19 million tonnes of cargo, generating more than US$95 million income. In the first seven months of this year, PAS’ cargo throughput rose by 26.52 percent to 5.7 million tonnes, while the number of containers reached over 570,000 TEUs, up 26.18 percent, generating more than US$66 million income, up 26.52 percent compared to the same period in 2023.
